Indications

  • Used to dilate the pupil for eye examinations
  • Used before and after eye surgery

Pharmacology

  • Induces mydriasis and cycloplegia through paralysis of the parasympathetic system
  • Acts by blocking the action of the parasympathetic nervous system
  • Rapid onset of effect with a short duration

Dosage & Administration

  • Instill 1 or 2 drops for refraction, repeated in 5 minutes
  • Instill 1 drop 15 to 20 minutes prior to fundus examination

Interaction

  • May be reinforced by atropine-like substances and certain antihistaminic substances
  • Capability to interact with various drugs such as tricyclic antidepressants and anti-Parkinson drugs

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in narrow angle glaucoma
  • Contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity to any component of the product

Side Effects

  • Slight burning sensation after instillation
  • Potential for psychotic episodes and behavioral changes in children
  • Impairs performance and responsiveness while driving or operating machinery

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy Category C
  • Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman

Precautions & Warnings

  • Consider administration of an antidote (miotic) after examination
  • Patient should compress the tear duct to reduce systemic absorption
  • Use with caution in older patients

Overdose Effects

  • Red face, accelerated pulse, dry mouth, reduced sweating could be signs of overdosing
  • Contact emergency doctor in case of accidental ingestion

  • Store at room temperature
  • Protect from light
  • Contents should not be used more than one month after first opening of the bottle
