Indications
- Used to dilate the pupil for eye examinations
- Used before and after eye surgery
Pharmacology
- Induces mydriasis and cycloplegia through paralysis of the parasympathetic system
- Acts by blocking the action of the parasympathetic nervous system
- Rapid onset of effect with a short duration
Dosage & Administration
- Instill 1 or 2 drops for refraction, repeated in 5 minutes
- Instill 1 drop 15 to 20 minutes prior to fundus examination
Interaction
- May be reinforced by atropine-like substances and certain antihistaminic substances
- Capability to interact with various drugs such as tricyclic antidepressants and anti-Parkinson drugs
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in narrow angle glaucoma
- Contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity to any component of the product
Side Effects
- Slight burning sensation after instillation
- Potential for psychotic episodes and behavioral changes in children
- Impairs performance and responsiveness while driving or operating machinery
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category C
- Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman
Precautions & Warnings
- Consider administration of an antidote (miotic) after examination
- Patient should compress the tear duct to reduce systemic absorption
- Use with caution in older patients
Overdose Effects
- Red face, accelerated pulse, dry mouth, reduced sweating could be signs of overdosing
- Contact emergency doctor in case of accidental ingestion
