Description
- Dopamine antagonist medication
- Used to treat nausea and vomiting
- Blocks dopamine receptors in the Chemoreceptor Trigger Zone (CTZ) and stomach
- Gastroprokinetic action
- Restores normal motility and tone of the upper gastrointestinal tract
DosageAndAdministration
- Should be taken 15-30 minutes before meals
- Usual recommended oral dose for adults: 10-20 mg every 6-8 hours daily
- Maximum dose for adults: 80 mg daily
- Pediatric dose based on body weight
Indications
- Dyspeptic symptom complex
- Acute nausea and vomiting
- Parkinson's disease
- Radiological studies
Interaction
- Contraindicated with anticholinergic drugs
- Main metabolic pathway is through CYP3A4
- Inhibition by azole antifungals, macrolide antibiotics, HIV protease inhibitors, nefazodone
- Potential effect on absorption of concomitantly orally administered drugs
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to the drug
- Neonates
- Gastrointestinal hemorrhage, mechanical obstruction or perforation
- Prolactin releasing pituitary tumor (prolactinoma)
