Indications
- Reduction of elevated intraocular pressure
- Treatment for open-angle glaucoma
- Treatment for ocular hypertension
Pharmacology
- Analog of prostaglandin F2α
- Selective FP receptor agonist
- Increases outflow of aqueous humor
- Main mechanism of action is increased uveoscleral outflow
- Reduces intraocular pressure
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dosage is 1 drop (1.5 mcg) in affected eye(s) once daily in the evening
- Topical ophthalmic use only
- Not for injection or oral use
Interaction
- In vitro studies show precipitation when mixed with eye drops containing thimerosal
- Administer with at least 5 minutes interval if using drugs containing thimerosal
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to latanoprost
- Known hypersensitivity to benzalkonium chloride
Side Effects
- Eyelash changes (increased length, thickness, pigmentation, number)
- Eyelid skin darkening
- Intraocular inflammation (iritis/uveitis)
- Iris pigmentation changes
- Macular edema, including cystoid macular edema
- Ocular adverse events reported in 5-15% of patients
- Blurred vision, burning, stinging, conjunctival hyperemia, foreign body sensation, itching, increased pigmentation of the iris, punctate epithelial keratopathy
- Local conjunctival hyperemia observed, less than 1% requiring discontinuation of therapy
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Category C - no adequate and well controlled studies in pregnant women
- Use during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus
Precautions & Warnings
- May gradually increase pigmentation of the iris
- Eye color change due to increased melanin content in stromal melanocytes of the iris
- Eyelid skin darkening, which may be reversible
- Caution in patients with history of intraocular inflammation
- Caution in patients without intact posterior capsule
- Use caution in patients with known risk factors for macular edema
Use in Special Populations
- Not established for pediatric patients
- No overall differences in safety or effectiveness observed between elderly and younger patients
Therapeutic Class

Storage Conditions
- Before opening, keep the bottle in its box in a refrigerator (2°C-8°C) protected from light
- After opening, keep the bottle in its box in a cool place below 25°C
- Contents should be used within one month after opening
- Keep out of reach of children
