Indications
- Reduction of elevated intraocular pressure in open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension
Pharmacology
- Analogue of prostaglandin F2α
- Prostanoid selective FP receptor agonist
- Believed to reduce intraocular pressure by increasing the outflow of aqueous humor
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dosage of 1 drop (1.5 mcg) in the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening
- Topical ophthalmic use only
Interaction
- In vitro studies show precipitation when mixed with eye drops containing thimerosal
- Administer with at least 5 minutes interval if using drugs containing thimerosal
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to latanoprost, benzalkonium chloride, or any other ingredients in the product
Side Effects
- Eyelash changes (increased length, thickness, pigmentation, number of lashes)
- Eyelid skin darkening
- Intraocular inflammation (iritis/uveitis)
- Iris pigmentation changes
- Macular edema, including cystoid macular edema
- Ocular adverse events and symptoms reported in 5-15% of patients (e.g., blurred vision, burning and stinging, conjunctival hyperemia, foreign body sensation, itching, increased pigmentation of the iris, punctate epithelial keratopathy)
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category C
- No adequate and well controlled studies in pregnant women
- Use during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus
Precautions & Warnings
- May gradually increase pigmentation of the iris
- Eye color change due to increased melanin content in stromal melanocytes of the iris
- Increase in brown iris pigment not shown to progress further upon discontinuation of treatment
- Eyelid skin darkening, which may be reversible
- Possible increase in eyelash length, thickness, pigmentation, and number of lashes
- Misdirected growth of eyelashes
- Use with caution in patients with a history of intraocular inflammation (iritis/uveitis)
- Use with caution in patients without an intact posterior capsule or with known risk factors for macular edema
Use in Special Populations
- Pediatric Use: Safety and effectiveness not established in pediatric patients
- Geriatric Use: No overall differences in safety or effectiveness observed between elderly and younger patients
Therapeutic Class
- Drugs for miotics and glaucoma
Storage Conditions
- Before opening, keep the bottle in its box in a refrigerator (2°C-8°C) protected from light
- After opening, keep the bottle in its box in a cool place below 25°C
- Contents should be used within one month after the dropper is opened
- Keep out of reach of children
