Indications
- Reduction of elevated intraocular pressure
- Treatment for open-angle glaucoma
- Treatment for ocular hypertension
Pharmacology
- Analog of prostaglandin F2α
- Selective FP receptor agonist
- Increases outflow of aqueous humor
- Mechanism of action: increased uveoscleral outflow
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dosage: 1 drop (1.5 mcg) in affected eye(s) once daily
- Topical ophthalmic use only
- Not for injection or oral use
Interaction
- Precipitation occurs when mixed with eye drops containing thimerosal
- Interval of at least 5 minutes between applications when using other drugs
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to latanoprost
- Known hypersensitivity to benzalkonium chloride
- Known hypersensitivity to other ingredients in the product
Side Effects
- Eyelash changes: increased length, thickness, pigmentation
- Eyelid skin darkening
- Intraocular inflammation: iritis/uveitis
- Iris pigmentation changes
- Macular edema, including cystoid macular edema
- Common ocular adverse events: blurred vision, burning, stinging, conjunctival hyperemia, foreign body sensation, itching, increased pigmentation of the iris, punctate epithelial keratopathy
- Rare ocular adverse events: local conjunctiva hyperemia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category C
- No adequate and well controlled studies in pregnant women
- Use during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus
Precautions & Warnings
- May increase pigmentation of the iris
- Eyelid skin darkening may be reversible
- Increase in eyelash length, thickness, pigmentation, and number
- Use with caution in patients with a history of intraocular inflammation
- Use with caution in patients without an intact posterior capsule
- Use with caution in patients with known risk factors for macular edema
Use in Special Populations
- Pediatric use: Safety and effectiveness not established
- Geriatric use: No overall differences in safety or effectiveness observed between elderly and younger patients
Therapeutic Class
- Drugs for miotics and glaucoma
Storage Conditions
- Before opening: keep in refrigerator (2°C-8°C) in box protected from light
- After opening: keep in box in a cool place below 25°C
- Contents should be used within one month after dropper is opened
- Keep out of reach of children
