Indications

  • Treatment of elevated intraocular pressure
  • Ocular hypertension
  • Open-angle glaucoma

Pharmacology

  • Non-selective β-adrenergic receptor blocker
  • Reduction of aqueous humour formation
  • No significant intrinsic sympathomimetic activity
  • No direct myocardial depressant activity

Dosage & Administration

  • Instill 1 drop of 0.25% solution bid initially
  • May increase to 1 drop of 0.5% solution bid if inadequate response
  • Decrease to 1 drop once daily if controlled
  • Do not exceed 1 drop bid of 0.5% solution

Interaction

  • Effect of concomitant therapy with Timomin and epinephrine
  • Drug interactions with beta-adrenergic blocking agents
  • Drug interactions with calcium antagonists
  • Drug interactions with catecholamine-depleting drugs

Contraindications

  • Bronchial asthma
  • Severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • Sinus bradycardia
  • Second or third degree atrioventricular block
  • Overt cardiac failure

Side Effects

  • Burning and stinging sensation of the eyes
  • Bradycardia
  • Hypotension
  • Arrhythmia and AV or SA nodal block
  • CHF

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Use during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus
  • Detection in breast milk
  • Discontinue nursing if serious adverse reactions observed in infants

Precautions & Warnings

  • Inadequate cardiac function
  • DM
  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Cerebrovascular insufficiency
  • History of atopy
  • Avoid abrupt withdrawal
  • Avoid use in angle-closure glaucoma

Overdose Effects

  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Shortness of breath
  • Bradycardia
  • Bronchospasm
