Indications

  • Treatment of elevated intraocular pressure
  • Patients with ocular hypertension
  • Patients with open-angle glaucoma

Pharmacology

  • Non-selective β-adrenergic receptor blocker
  • Reduction of aqueous humour formation
  • Lowering of blood pressure

Dosage & Administration

  • Initial dose of 0.25% solution bid
  • Increase to 0.5% solution bid if inadequate response
  • Decrease to 0.5% solution once daily if controlled
  • Instill 1 drop of gel-forming eye drops once daily

Interaction

  • Possible mydriasis with concomitant therapy with epinephrine
  • Interactions with beta-adrenergic blocking agents
  • Interactions with calcium antagonists
  • Interactions with catecholamine-depleting drugs
  • Interactions with digitalis
  • Interactions with quinidine
  • Interactions with clonidine
  • Interactions with injectable epinephrine

Contraindications

  • Bronchial asthma
  • Severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • Sinus bradycardia
  • Second or third degree atrioventricular block
  • Overt cardiac failure
  • Cardiogenic shock
  • Hypersensitivity to any component of the product

  • Arrhythmia and AV or SA nodal block
  • CHF
  • Pulmonary oedema
  • Raynaud's phenomenon
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue

  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Nausea
  • Constipation
  • Hypoglycaemia

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Use during pregnancy if potential benefit justifies potential risk to fetus
  • Drug detected in breast milk
  • Potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants

Precautions & Warnings

  • Patients with inadequate cardiac function
  • Patients with diabetes mellitus
  • Patients with myasthenia gravis
  • Patients with cerebrovascular insufficiency
  • Patients with history of atopy
  • Avoid abrupt withdrawal
  • May mask signs of hyperthyroidism and hypoglycaemia
  • Not to be used as monotherapy for angle-closure glaucoma
  • Patients with renal and hepatic impairment
  • Pregnancy and lactation

Overdose Effects

  • Systemic effects similar to systemic beta-adrenergic blocking agents
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Shortness of breath
  • Bradycardia
  • Bronchospasm
  • Cardiac arrest
