Indications
- Therapeutically treated as an adjunct to systemic therapy
- Primary or secondary topical infections
- Infected surgical incisions
- Infected decubitus or stasis ulcers
- Pyodermas
- Secondarily infected dermatoses
- Infected traumatic lesions
- Prevent microbial contaminations in burns and incisions
- Degerming skin in hyperalimentation, the umbilical area or circumcision
- Preventing infections in abrasions, minor cuts, and wounds
- Treatment and prevention of surface infections
- Treatment for seborrhea
- Preoperative and postoperative scrubbing and washing of hospital operating room and equipments
- Preoperative prepping of operative site
- Disinfection of wounds, burns, lacerations, and abrasions
- Prophylactic anti-infective agent in house, hospital, and office procedures
- Postoperative application to incisions to prevent infection
- Treatment of acute mucosal infections of the mouth and pharynx
- Oral hygiene prior to, during and after dental and oral surgery
- Antiseptic skin cleanser for preoperative and postoperative scrubbing and washing by surgeons and operation theatre staff
- Topical application in superficial wounds, minor cuts, burns, abrasions, and lacerations
- Symptomatic treatment of dry eye conditions including keratoconjunctivitis sicca
Pharmacology
- Complex of iodine and an organic polymer, povidone
- Lower toxicity than elemental iodine
- Rapid microbicidal activity against bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi/yeasts
- Sporicidal
- Non-staining
- Active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, pus, mucosal secretions, and water
Dosage & Administration
- Apply once or twice daily for a maximum of 14 days
- Apply once or twice a week for as long as necessary
- Apply full strength as often as needed
- Use undiluted or diluted with an equal volume of warm water
- Apply Povidone Iodine Surgical Scrub on the palm of the hand and spread over both hands and forearms
- For preoperative use on patients: Apply Povidone Iodine Surgical Scrub and scrub thoroughly for about five minutes
- Apply a light dusting of powder to the affected area
- Instill 1 drop 4 times daily or as required into the conjunctival sac
Interaction
- Exhibits interaction with strong alkali, sodium thiosulphate, sodium metabisulphite, and thiomersal
- Concurrent lithium therapy has been shown to exhibit hypothyroidic effect
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Regular use in patients with thyroid disorders or those receiving lithium therapy
- Assessment of serum iodide levels in severely burnt patients
- Not to be used in serious cavities and in Children under the age of 2 years
Side Effects
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Irritation of the skin and mucous membranes
- Systemic adverse effects such as metabolic acidosis, hypernatraemia, and impairment of renal function
- Interference with thyroid function tests
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy
- Considered usually compatible with breastfeeding
- No experience regarding the safety of the Povidone eye drops in human pregnancy or lactation
- Administration during pregnancy and lactation is not recommended, except for compelling reasons
Precautions & Warnings
- Special caution in case of deep or puncture wounds or serious burns
- Avoid 'pooling' beneath the patient during preoperative prepping
- Prolonged exposure to wet solution may cause irritation or rarely, severe skin reactions
- Regular use should be avoided as prolonged use may lead to absorption of a significant amount of iodine
- Care must be taken when used on known iodine sensitivity
- Patients who experience blurred vision after application of the eye drops should not drive or use machinery

- Do not freeze
- Store in a cool and dry place, protected from light
- Keep out of the reach of children
- Do not touch the ophthalmic solution dropper tip to any surface
- Do not use it after one month of the first opening
