Pharmacology

  • Complex of iodine and organic polymer
  • Rapid microbicidal activity
  • Effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi/yeasts
  • Non-staining
  • Active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, pus, mucosal secretions, and water

Dosage & Administration

  • Apply once or twice daily for a maximum of 14 days
  • Apply once or twice a week for as long as necessary
  • Apply full strength as often as needed as paint, spray, or wet soak
  • Gargle or rinse with up to 10 mL for up to 30 seconds without swallowing
  • Apply a light dusting of powder to the affected area
  • 1 drop 4 times daily or as required for ophthalmic solution

Interaction

  • Exhibits interaction with strong alkali, sodium thiosulphate, sodium metabisulphite, and thiomersal
  • Concurrent lithium therapy may cause hypothyroidic effect

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity reactions
  • Avoid regular use in patients with thyroid disorders or receiving lithium therapy
  • Avoid in severely burnt patients
  • Not recommended for use in children under the age of 2 years

Side Effects

  • Hypersensitivity reactions
  • Irritation of the skin and mucous membranes
  • Possible systemic adverse effects with application to severe burns or large denuded areas

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Not recommended for use during pregnancy
  • Usually compatible with breastfeeding (American Academy of Pediatrics)
  • Avoid regular use in pregnant and lactating women
  • Not recommended for use in human pregnancy or lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • Consult Registered Physician for deep or puncture wounds, serious burns, or persistent irritation
  • Avoid 'pooling' beneath the patient during preoperative prepping
  • Special caution for broken skin in patients with pre-existing renal insufficiency
  • Careful use in known iodine sensitivity
  • Patients experiencing blurred vision should not drive or use machinery
