Indications
- Primary or secondary topical infections
- Infected surgical incisions
- Infected decubitus or stasis ulcers

- Prevention of microbial contaminations in burns
- Preventative degerming for skin in hyperalimentation
- Abrasions, minor cuts, and wound healing
- Treatment of acute mucosal infections of the mouth and pharynx
- Oral hygiene prior to, during and after dental and oral surgery
- Antiseptic skin cleanser for preoperative and postoperative scrubbing and washing
- Topical application for superficial wounds, burns, and lacerations
- Symptomatic treatment of dry eye conditions including keratoconjunctivitis sicca
Pharmacology
- Complex of iodine and organic polymer
- Rapid microbicidal activity
- Effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi/yeasts
- Non-staining
- Active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, pus, mucosal secretions, and water
Dosage & Administration
- Apply once or twice daily for a maximum of 14 days
- Apply once or twice a week for as long as necessary
- Apply full strength as often as needed as paint, spray, or wet soak
- Gargle or rinse with up to 10 mL for up to 30 seconds without swallowing
- Apply a light dusting of powder to the affected area
- 1 drop 4 times daily or as required for ophthalmic solution
Interaction
- Exhibits interaction with strong alkali, sodium thiosulphate, sodium metabisulphite, and thiomersal
- Concurrent lithium therapy may cause hypothyroidic effect
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Avoid regular use in patients with thyroid disorders or receiving lithium therapy
- Avoid in severely burnt patients
- Not recommended for use in children under the age of 2 years
Side Effects
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Irritation of the skin and mucous membranes
- Possible systemic adverse effects with application to severe burns or large denuded areas
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy
- Usually compatible with breastfeeding (American Academy of Pediatrics)
- Avoid regular use in pregnant and lactating women
- Not recommended for use in human pregnancy or lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Consult Registered Physician for deep or puncture wounds, serious burns, or persistent irritation
- Avoid 'pooling' beneath the patient during preoperative prepping
- Special caution for broken skin in patients with pre-existing renal insufficiency
- Careful use in known iodine sensitivity
- Patients experiencing blurred vision should not drive or use machinery
