Indications

Pharmacology
- Complex of iodine and organic polymer
- Prolongs germicidal activity of iodine
- Rapid microbicidal activity against bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi/yeasts
- Sporicidal
- Non-staining
- Active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, pus, mucosal secretions, and water
Dosage & Administration
- Application frequency for treatment and prevention of infection
- Application as paint, spray, or wet soak
- Gargle and mouthwash usage for adults and children over 6 years of age
- Surgical scrub procedure for preoperative and postoperative washing
- Light dusting of powder application to affected area
- Ophthalmic solution instillation frequency
Interaction
- Interaction with strong alkali, sodium thiosulphate, sodium metabisulphite, and thiomersal
- Hypothyroidic effect with concurrent lithium therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Avoid regular use in patients with thyroid disorders or receiving lithium therapy
- Assessment of serum iodide levels in severely burnt patients
- Avoid use in serious cavities and in children under 2 years of age
Side Effects
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Irritation of the skin and mucous membranes
- Systemic adverse effects with application to severe burns or large denuded areas of skin
- Interference with thyroid function tests
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy
- Usually compatible with breastfeeding
- Avoid regular use in pregnant and lactating women
- Not recommended for use in human pregnancy or lactation except for compelling reasons
Precautions & Warnings
- Consultation for deep or puncture wounds, serious burns, and persistent irritation
- Avoid pooling of solution beneath the patient during preoperative prepping
- Caution in prolonged use and application to broken skin
- Special care with broken skin and pre-existing renal insufficiency
- Careful use on known iodine sensitivity
- Safety precautions for driving, machinery use, contact lens wear, and reinsertion timings
- Special caution in avoiding regular use in patients on concurrent lithium therapy
