Indications
- Used to temporarily numb the front surface of the eye for eye pressure measurement
- Used to numb the eye for foreign body removal
Pharmacology
- Local anaesthetic
- Binds to sodium channels
- Stabilizes neuronal membrane
- Reduces permeability to sodium ions
- Inhibits depolarization of neuronal membrane
- Blocks initiation and conduction of nerve impulses
Dosage & Administration
- 0.4% solution for short ophthalmic procedures
- Instill 1 drop for tonometry after 60 sec
- Additional drop after 90 sec interval for sufficient anaesthesia
- Avoid inflamed, infected, or damaged tissues
- Protect anaesthetised eye from dust and bacterial contamination
- Reduce systemic absorption by compressing the lacrimal sac at the medial canthus
Side Effects
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Transient stinging and blurring of vision
- Excitation of CNS
- Muscle twitching and tremors
- Convulsions
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category C
- Potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the foetus
Precautions & Warnings
- Reduce systemic absorption by compressing the lacrimal sac
- Avoid in heart block, epilepsy, impaired cardiac conduction, myasthenia gravis
- Protect from dust and bacterial contamination
- Cornea may be damaged by prolonged application
- Do not drive until normal vision restored
