Description
- Used to temporarily numb the front surface of the eye
- Local anaesthetic for short ophthalmic procedures
Indications
- Temporary numbness of the eye to measure eye pressure
- Temporary numbness for foreign body removal from the eye
Pharmacology
- Local anaesthetic action
- Binds to sodium channels to stabilize neuronal membrane
- Blocks initiation and conduction of nerve impulses
Dosage & Administration
- Available as 0.4% solution
- Instill 1 drop into the conjunctival sac for tonometry after 60 sec
- Additional drop after a 90 sec interval for sufficient anaesthesia
Side Effects
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Transient stinging and blurring of vision
- Excitation of CNS
- Muscle twitching and tremors
- Convulsions
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category C - potential risk to the fetus
- Drugs should be given only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus
Precautions & Warnings
- Reduce systemic absorption by compressing the lacrimal sac
- Precautions for heart block, epilepsy, impaired cardiac conduction, myasthenia gravis
- Avoid application to inflamed, infected tissues or damaged mucosa
- Protect anaesthetized eye from dust and bacterial contamination
- Do not drive until normal vision is restored
