Description

• Sympathomimetic nasal decongestant
• Fast-acting relief for nasal congestion

Indications

• Relief from nasal congestion in colds, rhinitis, sinusitis, and headache
• Treatment for tubal block and serous otitis media associated with nasal congestion

Dosage & Administration

• 0.1% solution for adults: 2-3 drops in each nostril 2-3 times daily
• 0.05% solution for children 6-12 years: 2-3 drops in each nostril 2-3 times daily
• Nasal spray for children 2-12 years: 1 spray per nostril not more than 3 times daily
• Nasal spray for adults and adolescents (>12 years): 1 spray into each nostril 1-3 times daily

Interaction

• No reported drug interactions

Contraindications

• Contraindicated in patients with transsphenoidal hypophysectomy or surgery exposing the dura mater
• Hypersensitivity to Xylometazoline
• Limited to single person use to prevent cross-infection
• Avoid use for more than seven consecutive days

Side Effects

• Occasional burning sensation in the nose and throat
• Local irritation
• Nausea and dryness of nasal mucosa

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Category C - not recommended during pregnancy
• Breastfeeding use only under doctor's instruction

Precautions & Warnings

• 0.1% drops not suitable for children below 12 years
• Avoid prolonged use in chronic rhinitis cases
• May cause rebound congestion and drug-induced rhinitis with extended use

Pharmacology

• Alpha-adrenergic activity leading to nasal vasoconstriction and decongestion
• Selective agonist at alpha-2B-adrenoceptors
