Indications
- Nasal congestion in colds, rhinitis, sinusitis, headache
- Tubal block and serous otitis media associated with nasal congestion
Description
Sympathomimetic agent with marked alpha-adrenergic activity for nasal use. Constricts nasal blood vessels, decongesting nasal mucosa and neighboring pharynx regions. Provides easy breathing through the nose.
Pharmacology
Causes vasoconstriction of nasal blood vessels, enhancing nasal airflow. Selective agonist at alpha-2B-adrenoceptors. Decreases nasal resistance, increases nasal airflow. Provides relief from earache and sore throat, speculated to be caused by vasoconstriction of nasal mucosa and allowing breathing through the nose.
Dosage & Administration
- Adults: 0.1%: 2 or 3 drops in each nostril two to three times daily
- Children 6 to 12 years: 0.05%: 2 or 3 drops in each nostril two or three times daily
- Children less than 6 years: 0.05%: 1 drop in each nostril two or three times daily
- Infants less than 3 months: Not to be used
- Children 2-12 years old: 0.05%: 1 spray, per nostril not more often than three times per day
- Adults and adolescents (over 12 years): 0.1%: 1 spray into each nostril, 1 to 3 times daily as needed. Do not exceed 3 applications daily into each nostril. Or, as directed by the registered physician

No drug interactions reported
Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with transsphenoidal hypophysectomy or surgery exposing the dura mater. Also contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to xylometazoline. Each xylometazoline nasal drop should be used by one person only. Prolonged use discouraged.
Side Effects
- Burning sensation in the nose and throat
- Local irritation
- Nausea and dryness of the nasal mucosa
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy category C. Not recommended during pregnancy. Use during breastfeeding only on the instructions of a doctor.
Precautions & Warnings
Adult nasal drops not for children below 12 years. Prolonged use may cause rebound congestion and drug-induced rhinitis.
