Indications
- Relief of nasal congestion in colds, rhinitis, and sinusitis
- Treatment of headache associated with nasal congestion
- Aid in tubal block and serous otitis media associated with nasal congestion
Description
- Sympathomimetic agent with marked alpha-adrenergic activity
- Intended for nasal use
- Constricts nasal blood vessels to decongest mucosa
- Enables easier breathing through the nose for cold sufferers
- Quick onset of action with long-lasting effect
Mode of Action and Pharmacology
- Alpha-adrenergic activity for vasoconstriction of nasal blood vessels
- Relief of nasal congestion by resumption of nasal airflow
- Selective agonist at alpha-2B-adrenoceptors
- Decreases nasal resistance during inspiration and expiration
- Increases volume of nasal airflow
- Potential relief of earache and sore throat through nasal decongestion
Dosage and Administration
- Adults: 0.1% nasal drops: 2 or 3 drops in each nostril 2-3 times daily
- Children 6-12 years: 0.05% nasal drops: 2 or 3 drops in each nostril 2-3 times daily
- Children under 6 years: 0.05% nasal drops: 1 drop in each nostril 2-3 times daily
- Infants under 3 months: Not for use
- Children 2-12 years: 0.05% nasal spray: 1 spray per nostril not more often than 3 times daily
- Adults and adolescents: 0.1% nasal spray: 1 spray into each nostril, 1-3 times daily as needed
Interaction
- No reported drug interactions
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with transsphenoidal hypophysectomy or dura mater exposure
- Hypersensitivity to Xylometazoline
- Single-person use to prevent cross-infection
- Avoid use for more than 7 consecutive days
Side Effects
- Occasional burning sensation in nose and throat
- Potential local irritation
- Possible nausea and dryness of nasal mucosa
Pregnancy and Lactation
- Category C for pregnancy
- Not recommended during pregnancy
- Breastfeeding use only under doctor's instructions
Precautions and Warnings
- Adult 0.1% nasal drops not for children under 12 years
- Avoid prolonged use in chronic rhinitis cases
- Risk of rebound congestion and drug-induced rhinitis with prolonged use
