Description
- Sympathomimetic agent with alpha-adrenergic activity
- Rapid relief of nasal congestion
- Long-lasting effect for easier breathing
Indications
- Relief of nasal congestion in colds, rhinitis, sinusitis, and headache
- Treatment of tubal block and serous otitis media associated with nasal congestion
Dosage & Administration
- Adults: 0.1% - 2 or 3 drops in each nostril two to three times daily
- Children 6 to 12 years: 0.05% - 2 or 3 drops in each nostril two or three times daily
- Children less than 6 years: 0.05% - 1 drop in each nostril two or three times daily
- Infants less than 3 months: Not to be used
- Children (2-12 years) - 0.05%: 1 spray per nostril not more than three times per day
- Adults and adolescents (over 12 years): 0.1% - 1 spray into each nostril, 1 to 3 times daily
Pharmacology
- Causes vasoconstriction of nasal blood vessels
- Selectively activates alpha-adrenergic receptors
- Decreases nasal resistance
- Increases nasal airflow volume
Interaction
- No reported drug interactions
Contraindications
- Not for patients with transsphenoidal hypophysectomy or surgery exposing the dura mater
- Hypersensitivity to Xylometazoline
- Not to be used for more than seven consecutive days
Side Effects
- Burning sensation in the nose and throat
- Local irritation
- Nausea and dryness of nasal mucosa
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy category C
- Not recommended during pregnancy
- Use while breastfeeding only on doctor's instructions
Precautions & Warnings
- Adult drops (0.1%) not for children below 12 years
- Avoid long-term use in chronic rhinitis cases
- May cause rebound congestion and drug-induced rhinitis with prolonged use
