Indications
- Nasal congestion in colds, rhinitis, sinusitis, headache
- Tubal block and serous otitis media associated with nasal congestion
Description
Sympathomimetic agent with marked alpha-adrenergic activity, intended for use in the nose. Constricts nasal blood vessels and decongests mucosa, enabling easier breathing through the nose.
Pharmacology
- Causes vasoconstriction of nasal blood vessels
- Selective agonist at alpha-2B-adrenoceptors
- Decreases nasal resistance and increases airflow
Dosage & Administration
- Adults: 0.1% - 2 or 3 drops in each nostril 2-3 times daily
- Children 6-12 years: 0.05% - 2 or 3 drops in each nostril 2-3 times daily
- Nasal spray for children and adults over 12 years based on concentration

Contraindications
- Patients with transsphenoidal hypophysectomy or surgery exposing dura mater
- Hypersensitivity to Xylometazoline
- Avoid using by multiple persons, not for more than 7 consecutive days
Side Effects
- Burning sensation in nose and throat
- Local irritation
- Nausea and dryness of nasal mucosa

Pregnancy category C, not to be used during pregnancy, breastfeeding only on doctor's instructions
Precautions & Warnings
- Adult drops not for children below 12 years
- Avoid prolonged use in chronic rhinitis cases to prevent rebound congestion
- Drug induced rhinitis
