Indications
- treatment of nasal congestion
- acute rhinitis
- chronic rhinitis
- common cold
- sinusitis

Pharmacology
- imidazoline derivative sympathomimetic amine
- direct agonist at α-adrenoceptors
- no action on β-adrenoceptors
- topical agent on the nasal mucosa
- rapid and long acting vasoconstriction
- reduced blood flow
- diminished swelling of the mucosa
- improved potency of the airway
- better drainage of the nasal sinus
Dosage
- 2-3 sprays in each nostril twice daily for 3-5 days in adults and children (6 years of age and older)
- no need for dosage reduction in the elderly
- not suitable for children below 6 years of age
- 2-3 drops of 0.05% Nasal Drops in each nostril twice daily in the morning and evening for adults & children 6 years of age
- 2-3 drops of 0.025% Nasal Drops in each nostril twice daily in the morning and evening for children 2-5 years of age
Administration
- shake the bottle gently
- remove the dust cover
- hold the spray with forefinger and middle finger on either side of the nozzle and thumb underneath the bottle
- press down until a fine spray appears
- gently blow the nose to clear the nostrils
- insert the nasal applicator into the nostril
- tilt head forward slightly and keep the spray upright
- breathe in through the nose and press the white-collar of nasal applicator firmly down once to release a spray
- breathe out through the mouth
- repeat the steps in the same/other nostril for consecutive doses
- clean the nasal spray at least once a week by removing the dust cover, pulling off the nasal applicator, washing in warm water, shaking off the excess water, leaving to dry in a normal place, and re-fixing the dust cover
Interaction
- should not be given to patients being treated with MAO inhibitors or within 14 days of ceasing such treatment
Contraindications
- patients with cardiovascular disease
- hyperthyroidism
- prostatic enlargement
- angle closure glaucoma
- hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients
Side Effects
- local irritation
- dryness of the mouth and throat
- burning
- stinging
- sneezing
- increase in nasal discharge
Pregnancy & Lactation
- safety during pregnancy and lactation has not been established
Precautions & Warnings
- keep away from the eyes
- should not be used for longer than seven days without medical advice
- frequent or prolonged use may cause nasal congestion to recur or worsen
Overdose Effects
- local irritation
- rebound congestion
- treatment need only be symptomatic
