Indications
- Improves glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus
Pharmacology
- Inhibits subtype-2 sodium-glucose co-transport protein (SGLT2)
- Reduces reabsorption of glucose from renal tubules
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended starting dose of 100 mg once daily
- Dose can be increased to 300 mg once daily for specific conditions
- No dose adjustment required for mild renal impairment
Interaction
- UGT inducers may reduce Canaglif exposure
- May slightly increase the concentration of digoxin in the body
Contraindications
- Serious hypersensitivity reaction to Canagliflozin
- Severe renal impairment
- End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)
- Patients on dialysis
Side Effects
- Common adverse reactions include female genital mycotic infections, urinary tract infection, increased urination
- Other side effects include low blood pressure, hyperkalemia, low blood glucose, increased LDL-C
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category C
- Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus
- Discontinue drug or nursing for nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Not for the treatment of type 1 diabetes mellitus or diabetic ketoacidosis
