Indications
- Adjunct to diet and exercise
- Improves glycemic control
- Type 2 diabetes mellitus
Pharmacology
- Inhibitor of subtype-2 SGLT2
- Reduces glucose reabsorption in the kidney
- Increases excretion of glucose in urine
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended starting dose: 100 mg once daily
- Can be increased to 300 mg once daily
- No dose adjustment required for mild renal impairment
Interaction
- UGT inducers reduce Diacana exposure
- Dose adjustment with UGT inducers
- Diacana may increase digoxin concentration in the body
Contraindications
- History of serious hypersensitivity reaction to Canagliflozin
- Severe renal impairment
- End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)
- Dialysis patients
Side Effects
- Female genital mycotic infections
- Urinary tract infection
- Increased urination
- Low blood pressure
- Increases potassium blood levels
- Low blood glucose
- Increases LDL-C levels
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category C
- Use during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus
- Discontinue drug or nursing during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Not for treatment of type 1 diabetes mellitus
- Not for diabetic ketoacidosis
