Relaxo 50 mg (Capsule)

Indications

• Control manifestations of clinical spasticity
• Benefit patients with reversible spasticity
• Treatment for signs of malignant hyperthermia
• Prevent recurrence of malignant hyperthermia signs

Pharmacology

• Produces relaxation in skeletal muscle
• Affects contractile response of skeletal muscle
• Interferes with release of Ca++ from sarcoplasmic reticulum

Dosage & Administration

• Gradual titration schedule for adults
• Gradual titration schedule for paediatric patients
• Preoperative administration for malignant hyperthermia
• Post-crisis follow-up dosage for malignant hyperthermia

Interaction

• Drowsiness may occur with therapy
• Concomitant administration with CNS depressants may cause further drowsiness
• Hepatotoxicity more common in women over 35 years receiving estrogen therapy

Contraindications

• Active hepatic disease including hepatitis and cirrhosis

Side Effects

• Frequently occurring side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, weakness, and general malaise
• Diarrhea may be severe and necessitate temporary withdrawal of therapy

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy Category C
• Use during pregnancy justified if potential benefit outweighs potential risk to fetus
• Not to be used in nursing mothers

Precautions & Warnings

• Potential for liver damage, therapy to be stopped if benefits are not evident within 45 days
• Caution against driving or participating in hazardous occupations while taking the medicine
• Caution in concomitant administration with tranquilizing agents
• Possibility of evoking a photosensitivity reaction
• Liver function studies for baseline at the start of therapy
• Frequent laboratory monitoring for liver function tests during therapy
• Caution in patients with impaired pulmonary or cardiac function
• Use with caution in patients with a history of previous liver disease or dysfunction

Use in Special Populations

• Long-term safety not established in paediatric patients under 5 years
• Benefit-risk consideration for long-term use in pediatric patients
