Indications
- Bronchial asthma
- Bronchospasm
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

Pharmacology
- Novel bronchodilator
- Selective inhibition of phosphodiesterase 4
- Relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle
- Decreased affinities toward adenosine A1 and A2 receptors
- Inhibition of platelet activating factor (PAF)
- Inhibition of leukotriene production
Dosage & Administration
- 200 mg tablet for elderly
- 400 mg tablet for adults
- 10 ml syrup for children over 12 years
- 6-9 mg/kg body weight for children 6-12 years
- Doxophylline SR tablet for 400 mg daily dose
Interaction
- Avoidance with other xanthine preparations
- Limitation of caffeine-containing beverages and food
- Caution with ephedrine or other sympathomimetic drugs
- Concurrent administration with erythromycin, TAO, lincomycin, clindamycin, allopurinol, cimetidine, influenza vaccine, propanolol
- Increased clearance with phenytoin, other anticonvulsants, cigarette smoking

- Hypersensitivity to the drug or other xanthine derivatives
- Acute myocardial infarction
- Hypotension
- Lactation

Precautions & Warnings
- Reduced hepatic clearance with increased plasma levels
- Factors including age, congestive cardiac decompensation, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, severe liver disease, concomitant infections impacting clearance
- Caution in patients with cardiac disease, hypertension, hypoxemia, hyperthyroidism, chronic corpulmonale, congestive heart failure, liver disease, peptic ulcer, renal impairment
- Slower clearance in congestive heart failure patients
- No risk of addiction or dependence
Overdose Effects
- Severe cardiac arrhythmias
- Tonic-clonic seizure
- Discontinuation and potential resumption at lower doses
