Description

Recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO) used for the treatment of anemia in various conditions.

Indications

  • Treatment of anemia in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
  • Treatment of anemia in HIV-infected patients on Zidovudine
  • Reduction of allogeneic RBC transfusions in patients undergoing surgery
  • Prevention of anemia of prematurity in infants

Dosage

Dosage guidelines based on patient condition and response to therapy

Erythropoietin

  • Origin: Expressed in Chinese hamster ovary cells
  • Amino Acid Sequence: Identical to human urinary EPO (165 amino acids)
  • Molecular Weight: Approximately 30,400 daltons

Administration

  • Preparation: Do not shake or freeze
  • Inspection: Visually inspect for particulate matter and discoloration prior to administration
  • Storage: Store at 2-8°C, protect from light

Interaction

Potentiation by concurrent use of haematinic agents such as ferrous sulphate

Contraindications

  • Uncontrolled hypertension
  • Serious allergic reactions to Erythropoietin alfa
  • Pure Red Cell Aplasia (PRCA) following erythropoietin treatment
