Indications
- Active management of the third stage of labour
- Treatment and prophylaxis of postpartum haemorrhage
- Excessive uterine bleeding

Pharmacology
- Causes contraction of the uterine muscle
- Increased frequency and amplitude of contractions
- Basal tone increase of the uterus
- Vasoconstriction of peripheral and cerebral vessels

- Intramuscular administration for active management of the third stage of labour
- Intravenous administration for excessive uterine bleeding
- Oral administration for postpartum and post-abortion bleeding

Interaction
- Interaction with halothane
- Enhanced uterotonic effect with prostaglandins and oxytocin
- Concurrent administration with CYP3A4 inhibitors
Contraindications
- Pregnancy
- 1st and 2nd stage of labour
- Patients with preeclampsia, eclampsia or threatened spontaneous abortion
- Porphyria
