Indications
- Prevention of uterine atony
- Prevention of postpartum haemorrhage
- Following delivery of infant by caesarean section
Pharmacology
- Analogous to oxytocin
- Causes contraction of the uterus
- Binds to oxytocin receptors
- Increases uterine tone
Dosage & Administration
- Single intravenous dose of 100 mcg
- Administered by bolus injection
- Administered slowly over 1 minute
- To be used as a single dose only

Contraindications
- Cannot be stopped by discontinuing medication
- Should not be administered prior to delivery
- Should not be used in patients with hypersensitivity to oxytocin or carbetocin
- Not intended for use in children

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Contraindicated during pregnancy

Precautions & Warnings
- More aggressive treatment may be warranted if uterine contraction is inadequate
- Hyponatremia may occur
- Use cautiously in patients with epilepsy, migraine, asthma
- Not recommended for use in elderly patients
