Description

Dosage & Administration

  • To be taken 15-30 minutes before meals
  • Usual recommended oral dose for adults: 10-20 mg every 6-8 hours daily
  • Maximum dose for adults: 80 mg daily
  • Recommended dose for children: 0.2-0.4 mg/kg body weight every 6-8 hours daily
  • By rectum in suppositories: 30-60 mg every 4-8 hours for adults

Interaction

  • Antagonized by concomitant administration of anticholinergic drugs

  • Does not potentiate the action of neuroleptics or dopaminergic agonists

Contraindications

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No evidence of increase in the risk of malformations in humans
  • Excreted in breast milk of lactating rats
  • Not recommended for nursing mothers unless expected benefits outweigh potential risk

  • Increased risk of extra-pyramidal reactions in young children
  • Highly metabolized in the liver, caution required in hepatic impairment
