Indications
- Symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhea
Description
- Pure intestinal antisecretory active substance
- Decreases intestinal hypersecretion of water and electrolytes
- Rapidly absorbed and hydrolysed to thiorphan
- Inhibitor of enkephalinase
- Prolongs action of enkephalins
- Exerts rapid antidiarrhoeal action
- Does not modify the duration of intestinal transit
Pharmacology
- Increases availability of endogenous opioids (enkephalins)
- Inhibits membrane-bound enkephalinase
- Mediates effect through δ receptor
- Induces selective increase in Cl absorption by inhibiting adenylate cyclase
- Onset: 30 min (plasma enkephalinase inhibition)
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: one capsule initially, then one capsule three times daily
- Children dosage: determined according to body weight
- Administration together with oral rehydration
- Specific dosages for infants and children based on weight
Interaction
- No drug interactions found with Loperamide or Nifuroxazide
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Racecadotril or any of the excipients
Side Effects
- Headache

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women due to lack of clinical data
Precautions & Warnings
- Does not modify usual rehydration regimens
- Caution in patients with renal or liver impairment
- Not tested in antibiotic-associated diarrhea
Overdose Effects
- No reported cases of overdose
- Single doses above 2 g have been administered without harmful effects
