Indications

• Symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhea

Description

• Pure intestinal antisecretory active substance
• Rapidly absorbed and hydrolysed to thiorphan
• Inhibitor of enkephalinase
• Protects enkephalins from enzymatic degradation
• Prolongs action at enkephalinergic synapses
• Exerts rapid antidiarrhoeal action

Pharmacology

• Increases availability of endogenous opioids
• Inhibits membrane-bound enkephalinase
• Endogenous opioids mediate effect through delta opioid receptor activation
• Induces selective increase in Cl absorption
• Onset: 30 min (plasma enkephalinase inhibition)

Dosage & Administration

• One capsule initially for adults, then one capsule three times daily
• Recommended dose for children based on body weight
• Granules for children from 3 months of age

Interaction

• No drug interactions found
• Joint treatment with Loperamide or Nifuroxazide does not modify kinetics of Receca

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to Racecadotril or excipients

Side Effects

• Headache
• Erythema multiforme
• Urticaria
• Angioedema

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women due to lack of clinical data

Precautions & Warnings

• Does not modify usual rehydration regimens
• Presence of bloody stools and fever may indicate severe disease
• Not tested in antibiotic-associated diarrhea
• Caution in patients with renal or liver impairment

Overdose Effects

• No reported cases of overdose
• Single doses above 2 g in adults have not shown harmful effects
