Indications
- acute diarrhea treatment
Description
- intestinal antisecretory active substance
- decreases intestinal hypersecretion
- rapidly absorbed
- inhibitor of enkephalinase
- protects enkephalins from degradation
- exerts rapid antidiarrhoeal action
Pharmacology
- increases availability of endogenous opioids
- inhibits membrane-bound enkephalinase
- mediates effect through δ receptor
- induces a selective increase in Cl absorption
- onset: 30 min (plasma enkephalinase inhibition)

- administered with oral rehydration

Interaction
- no drug interactions found
- no modification of kinetics when joint treatment with Loperamide or Nifuroxazide
Contraindications
- hypersensitivity to Racecadotril or excipients

Pregnancy & Lactation
- not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women due to lack of clinical data
Precautions & Warnings
- does not modify usual rehydration regimens
- presence of bloody stools and fever may indicate severe disease
- not tested in antibiotic-associated diarrhea
- caution in patients with renal or liver impairment

- no reported cases of overdose
- no harmful effects described at single doses above 2 g
