Indications

• Improves glycemic control in patients with diabetes mellitus

Composition

• Each ml solution contains 100 IU (equivalent to 3.50 mg) Insulin Aspart (rDNA)

Description

• Sterile, clear solution of NovoRapid human insulin analogue for subcutaneous injection/infusion or intravenous injection
• Blood glucose lowering agent with earlier onset of action
• Homologous with regular human insulin with a single substitution of the amino acid Proline by aspartic acid

Pharmacology

• Regulation of glucose metabolism by binding to insulin receptors on muscle and fat cells

Dosage

• Faster onset and shorter duration of action than soluble human insulin
• Generally given immediately before a meal
• Individual and determined on the basis of the physician's advice
• Usually used in combination with long-acting insulin given at least once a day

Administration

• Instructions for patient before injecting this insulin, such as cartridge insertion and dosage adjustment

Interaction

• Possible drug interactions affecting glucose metabolism and requiring dose adjustment

Side Effects

• Hypoglycemia, allergic reactions, injection site reaction, lipodystrophy, pruritus, rash

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy category B, no restrictions on treatment during lactation, dosage may need to be adjusted

Precautions & Warnings

• Blood glucose monitoring in all patients treated with insulin
• Modifications should be made cautiously and only under medical supervision

Overdose Effects

• Sequential stages of hypoglycemia if too high doses are administered
• Treatment for mild and severe hypoglycemic episodes
