Indications
- Treatment of active duodenal ulcer
- Benign gastric ulcer
- Treatment & prevention of ulcer associated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent
- Post operative stress ulcer
- Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Gastro-intestinal haemorrhage from stress ulcer in seriously ill patient

Pharmacology
- Competitive blocking of histamine at H2-receptors
- Inhibition of gastric acid secretion
- No effect on pepsin secretion
- No effect on pentagastrin-stimulated intrinsic factor secretion
- No effect on serum gastrin
Dosage & Administration
- 150 mg tablet twice daily for active duodenal ulcer
- 300 mg tablet daily at night for 4 to 8 weeks for active duodenal ulcer
- 150 mg tablet twice daily for reflux oesophagitis
- 300 mg tablet daily at bedtime for up to 8 weeks for reflux oesophagitis
- 150 mg tablet 3 times daily for Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
- 150 mg tablet twice daily for episodic dyspepsia
- 300 mg tablet at bedtime for up to 6 weeks for episodic dyspepsia
- 150 mg tablet at night for prevention of recurrences
- Oral dose of 2-4 mg/kg twice daily for children with peptic ulcer
- Intravenous injection every six to eight hours for haemorrhage from stress ulceration in seriously ill patients
- Intravenous infusion at a rate of 25 mg per hour for two hours for haemorrhage prophylaxis
- Intramuscular injection every six to eight hours for haemorrhage prophylaxis
- Intramuscular or slow intravenous injection 45 to 60 minutes before general anesthesia in at-risk patients
- Oral dose of 2 mg/kg to 4 mg/kg twice daily for children with peptic ulcer
Interaction
- Delayed absorption and increased peak serum concentration with propantheline bromide
- Minimal inhibition of hepatic metabolism of certain drugs
- Alteration of absorption of pH-dependent drugs
- Reduced bioavailability with antacids
