Pharmacology

Human insulin made by DNA recombinant technology, regulates glucose metabolism, stimulates glucose utilization, accelerates transformation to glycogen, and inhibits gluconeogenesis.

Dosage

Individualized dosage under doctor's instruction, average total daily insulin requirement for maintenance therapy in type 1 diabetic patients 0.5-1.0 IU/kg, initial dosages for type 2 diabetic patients often lower

Administration

  • Subcutaneous injection 15 minutes to 1 hour before meal
  • Prepare before use - clean hands, mix solution, choose injection site, inject insulin
  • Injection Site - upper arm, thigh, buttock, abdomen, etc.
  • Injection Method - cleanse skin, position needle at 45° angle, inject insulin, apply gentle pressure

Interaction

  • With oral contraceptives, adrenal cortical hormone, thyroid hormone - may need to increase insulin amount
  • With hypoglycemic drugs, salicylate, sulfanilamide, and other anti-depressants - may need to reduce insulin dosage

Contraindications

  • Hypoglycemia
  • Allergic reaction to insulin or any of the excipients

Pregnancy & Lactation

No restrictions on insulin treatment during pregnancy; insulin treatment of nursing mother presents no risk to the baby

Precautions & Warnings

  • Hypoglycemia may occur if insulin dose is too high
  • Omission of a meal or unplanned, strenuous physical exercise may lead to hypoglycemia

Overdose Effects

Excessive use of insulin may lead to hypoglycemia; immediate treatment required
