Indications
- Treatment of active duodenal ulcer
- Benign gastric ulcer
- Ulcer associated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent
- Post operative stress ulcer
- Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Gastro-intestinal haemorrhage
Pharmacology
- Competitively blocks histamine at H2-receptors
- Inhibits gastric acid secretion
- Does not affect pepsin secretion
Dosage & Administration
- Usual dosage of 150 mg twice daily for duodenal and gastric ulcer
- Recommended 150 mg twice daily for reflux oesophagitis
- Recommended 150 mg 3 times daily for Zollinger Ellison syndrome
- Recommended dosage for episodic dyspepsia
- Recommended maintenance dosage
Interaction
- Delayed absorption with propantheline bromide
- Minimally inhibits hepatic metabolism of certain drugs
- May alter absorption of pH-dependent drugs
- May reduce bioavailability with antacids
Contraindications
- Patients hypersensitive to Ranitidine

- Muscle or joint pain
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Ranitidine crosses the placenta
- No evidence of impaired fertility or harm to the fetus
- Caution during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Given in reduced dosage to patients with impaired renal and hepatic function
Use in Special Populations
- Similar ulcer healing rates in elderly patients
- No difference in incidence of adverse effects in elderly patients
Overdose Effects
- No particular problems expected following overdosage
- Symptomatic and supportive therapy should be given
- Drug may be removed from plasma by haemodialysis
