Virux 5% w/w (Cream)

Indications

• Treatment of recurrent herpes labialis (cold sores) in immunocompetent adults and adolescents 12 years of age and older

Pharmacology

• Antiviral drug active against herpes simplex virus
• Inhibitory activity against HSV types 1 and 2
• Competitive inhibition of viral DNA polymerase
• Incorporation into and termination of the growing viral DNA chain
• Inactivation of the viral DNA polymerase

Dosage & Administration

• Apply five times per day for four days
• Initiate therapy early after the onset of signs or symptoms of herpes labialis

Interaction

• No identified interactions from topical or systemic administration of other drugs
• Unlikely systemic drug interactions due to minimal systemic absorption

Contraindications

• Known hypersensitivity to acyclovir, valacyclovir, or any component of the formulation

• Dry lips
• Desquamation
• Dryness of skin
• Cracked lips
• Burning skin
• Pruritus
• Flakiness of skin
• Stinging on skin

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy Category B
• Use during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus
• Unknown excretion in breast milk
• Minimal systemic exposure following topical administration

Precautions & Warnings

• Apply only on the affected external aspects of the lips and face
• Not recommended for application to human mucous membranes
• Intended for cutaneous use only
• Avoid use in the eye or inside the mouth or nose
• Potential for irritation and contact
• Effect not established in immunocompromised patients

Use in Special Populations

• Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients less than 12 years of age not established
• Systemic absorption minimal after topical administration
