Pharmacology
Bambuterol, a prodrug of terbutaline, is a long acting β2 adrenergic receptor agonist used in the treatment of asthma. Bambuterol is an adrenergic β2 receptor agonist which predominantly stimulates β2 receptor, thus producing relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle, inhibition of release of endogenous spasmogens, inhibition of edema caused by endogenous mediators & increased mucocilliary clearance.
Dosage & Administration
- Children 2-5 years: 10 mg (10 ml syrup)
- Children 6-12 years:
- 10 mg (10 ml syrup)
- may be increased to 20 mg
- Adult:
- Recommended initial dose 10 mg
- may be increased to 20 mg after 1-2 weeks depending on clinical effect

Contraindications
Hepatic impairment, liver cirrhosis or severely impaired liver function

Pregnancy & Lactation
Caution recommended during first trimester of pregnancy. Caution is recommended if administered to breast feeding patients.
Precautions & Warnings
Dose should be reduced in patients with severely impaired renal function, genetic deficiencies of plasma cholinesterase, severe ischemic heart disease
Overdose Effects
No case of bambuterol overdosage reported in humans. Likely symptoms & signs may include: headache, anxiety, tremor, nausea, tonic muscle cramps, palpitations, tachycardia & cardiac arrythmias. Laboratory findings: hyperglycaemia, lactacidosis may occur. High doses may cause hypokalemia.
