Indications

  • Bactericidal activity against a wide range of organisms
  • Treatment of respiratory tract infections, genito-urinary tract infections, gastro-intestinal tract infections, osteomyelitis, skin infections, septicaemia, bacillary dysentery, and more

Pharmacology

  • Broad spectrum bactericidal activity
  • Acts against gram-positive & gram-negative bacteria and some protozoa
  • Contains Trimethoprim and Sulphamethoxazole in a 1:5 combination

Dosage & Administration

  • Different dosages for mild to moderate, severe, and long term infections
  • Specific dosages for different age groups
  • Tablet and suspension forms available

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to trimethoprim or sulphonamides
  • Megaloblastic anaemia due to folate deficiency
  • Marked liver parenchymal damage, blood dyscrasia, severe renal insufficiency, glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency

Side Effects

  • Rare side effects like crystalluria, haemolysis, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, and agranulocytosis
  • Less serious side effects like malaise, headache, nausea, and vomiting

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Sulphonamides pass the placenta and are excreted in breast milk
  • May cause kernicterus

Precautions & Warnings

  • Prolonged full dose treatment associated with the risk of macrocytic anaemia
  • Interference in the conversion of Folic acid into Folinic acid
  • Care needed when giving Alkatrim to diabetic patients receiving sulphonylurea drug
