Indications

• Respiratory tract infections
• Genito-urinary tract infections
• Gastro-intestinal tract infections
• Osteomyelitis
• Skin infections
• Septicaemia

Pharmacology

Bactericidal activity against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria

Dosage & Administration

• Cotrimoxazole double strength tablet:
  • Mild to moderate infections
  • Severe infections
  • Long term therapy
  • Gonorrhoea
• Cotrimoxazole tablet:
  • Mild to moderate infections
  • Severe infections
  • Long term therapy
• Cotrimoxazole suspension:
  • 6-12 years
  • 6 months-5 years
  • 6 weeks-6 months

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to trimethoprim or sulphonamides
• Megaloblastic anaemia
• Liver parenchymal damage
• Renal insufficiency
• Glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency

Side Effects

• Crystalluria
• Allergic reactions
• Haemolysis
• Thrombocytopenia
• Neutropenia
• Agranulocytosis
• Malaise
• Headache
• Nausea
• Vomiting

Pregnancy & Lactation

Sulphonamides pass the placenta and are excreted in the breast milk and may cause kernicterus

Precautions & Warnings

• Macrocytic anaemia risk
• Diabetic patients precaution
• Folic acid interference
• Folinic acid reversal
