Indications
- Treatment of active duodenal ulcer
- Benign gastric ulcer
- Prevention of ulcer associated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent
- Treatment of postoperative stress ulcer
- Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome treatment
- Treatment of Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Treatment of gastrointestinal hemorrhage from stress ulcer in seriously ill patients
- Prevention of recurrent hemorrhage in patients with bleeding peptic ulcer
- Prevention of acid aspiration before general anesthesia in at-risk patients
Pharmacology
- Competitively blocks histamine at H2-receptors
- Inhibits gastric acid secretion
Dosage & Administration
- Usual dosage of 150 mg twice daily for duodenal and gastric ulcer
- Usual dosage of 150 mg twice daily for reflux oesophagitis
- Recommended dosage of 150 mg 3 times daily for Zollinger Ellison syndrome
- Recommended dosage of 150 mg twice daily for episodic dyspepsia
Interaction
- Delayed absorption and increased peak serum concentration with propantheline bromide
- Minimally inhibits hepatic metabolism of certain drugs
- May alter absorption of pH-dependent drugs
- May reduce bioavailability with antacids

- Hypersensitivity to Ranitidine

- No significant difference in adverse effects in elderly patients
Overdose Effects
- No particular problems expected
- Symptomatic and supportive therapy recommended in case of overdose
- Hemodialysis may be considered
