Description

  • Indicated for respiratory tract infections, genito-urinary tract infections, gastrointestinal tract infections, and more

  • Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to trimethoprim or sulphonamides, documented megaloblastic anaemia, marked liver parenchymal damage, blood dyscrasia, severe renal insufficiency, and glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency
  • Rare side effects include crystalluria, allergic reactions, haemolysis, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, agranulocytosis
  • Less serious side effects include malaise, headache, nausea, and vomiting
  • Sulphonamides may pass the placenta and are excreted in breast milk, potentially causing kernicterus
  • Prolonged full dose treatment may be associated with the risk of macrocytic anaemia

          Dosage and Administration

          • For mild to moderate infections: 1 tablet (double strength) twice daily for patients over 12 years
          • For severe infections: 1.5 tablets (double strength) twice daily for patients over 12 years
          • Long term therapy (>14 days): 0.5 tablet (double strength) twice daily for patients over 12 years
          • Gonorrhoea treatment: 2 tablets (double strength) every 12 hours for two days or 2.5 tablets followed by a further dose of 2.5 tablets after 8 hours for patients over 12 years
          • For patients over 12 years: 2 tablets (standard strength) twice daily for mild to moderate infections
          • For patients over 12 years: 2 tablets (standard strength) thrice daily for severe infections
          • Long term therapy (>14 days) for patients over 12 years: 1 tablet (standard strength) twice daily
          • For 6-12 years: 2 teaspoonful of suspension twice daily
          • For 6 month-5 years: 1 teaspoonful of suspension twice daily
          • For 6 weeks-6 months: 0.5 teaspoonful of suspension twice daily
