Pharmacology
- Competitive blockade of histamine at H2-receptors
- Inhibition of gastric acid secretion
- No effect on pepsin secretion, pentagastrin-stimulated intrinsic factor secretion, or serum gastrin
Dosage & Administration
- 150 mg tablet or syrup for duodenal and gastric ulcer
- 150 mg tablet or syrup for reflux esophagitis
- 150 mg tablet for zollinger ellison syndrome
- 150 mg tablet for episodic dyspepsia
- 150 mg tablet for maintenance
- 2-4 mg/kg dosage for children with peptic ulcer
- Slow intravenous injection of ranitidine for haemorrhage prophylaxis in seriously ill patients
- Intravenous infusion for upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage prophylaxis
- Intramuscular injection for patients at risk of acid aspiration syndrome
Interaction
- Delayed absorption with propantheline bromide
- Minimal inhibition of hepatic metabolism with coumarin anticoagulants, theophylline, diazepam, and propranolol
- Potential alteration of absorption for pH-dependent drugs
- Reduction of bioavailability with antacids
