Indications

Pharmacology

  • Competitive blockade of histamine at H2-receptors
  • Inhibition of gastric acid secretion
  • No effect on pepsin secretion, pentagastrin-stimulated intrinsic factor secretion, or serum gastrin

Dosage & Administration

  • 150 mg tablet or syrup for duodenal and gastric ulcer
  • 150 mg tablet or syrup for reflux esophagitis
  • 150 mg tablet for zollinger ellison syndrome
  • 150 mg tablet for episodic dyspepsia
  • 150 mg tablet for maintenance
  • 2-4 mg/kg dosage for children with peptic ulcer
  • Slow intravenous injection of ranitidine for haemorrhage prophylaxis in seriously ill patients
  • Intravenous infusion for upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage prophylaxis
  • Intramuscular injection for patients at risk of acid aspiration syndrome

Interaction

  • Delayed absorption with propantheline bromide
  • Minimal inhibition of hepatic metabolism with coumarin anticoagulants, theophylline, diazepam, and propranolol
  • Potential alteration of absorption for pH-dependent drugs
  • Reduction of bioavailability with antacids

  • Hypersensitivity to Ranitidine
