Usage
- Reduction in Post-Prandial Hyperglycaemia (PPHG)
- Immunotherapy for non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM)
- Combination therapy with other OHAs
- Prevention of onset of type 2 diabetes mellitus in impaired glucose tolerance
- Prevention of hypoglycaemia in glycogen storage disease
- Prevention of hypoglycaemic attacks in non-diabetic Hyperinsulinemia
- Prevention of hypoglycaemia in steroid-induced diabetes mellitus
Description
- Selective inhibition of α-glucosidase in the enteric canal
- Suppression of sharp increase in post-prandial plasma glucose
Pharmacology
- Inhibition of enzymes needed to digest carbohydrates
- Reduction in the rate of digestion of complex carbohydrates
- Reduction in glucose absorption
- Decrease in current blood glucose levels
- Small reduction in hemoglobin-A1c level
Dosage and Administration
- Oral administration in a single dose of 0.2 mg, 3 times a day
- Possible dose adjustment to 0.3 mg if necessary
- Lower starting dose for elderly patients
- Close observation for geriatrics
Interaction
- Cautious administration with antidiabetic drugs
- Enhancement or diminishment of hypoglycaemic action by concomitant drugs
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Voglibose or excipients
- Diabetic ketoacidosis, diabetic pre-coma
- Severe infection, serious trauma
- Gastrointestinal obstruction or predisposition to it
Side Effects
- Diarrhoea, loose stools, abdominal pain
- Constipation, nausea, vomiting
- Heartburn, increased gas, intestinal obstruction symptoms
- Hypoglycaemia with OHAs plus Vibose
- Fulminant hepatitis, serious liver dysfunction
- Numbness, edema, blurred vision
- Malaise, weakness, hyperkalemia, increased pancreatic enzyme
Pregnancy and Lactation
- Safety in pregnancy not established
- Exceedingly low levels in human milk
- Not recommended for nursing mothers
Precautions and Warnings
- Careful administration in patients receiving other antidiabetic drugs
- Caution in patients with laparotomy, ileus, chronic intestinal disease
- Special attention in patients with hepatic or renal dysfunction
Special Populations
- Poor absorption in renal failure
- No dose adjustment required in renal insufficiency
Overdose Effects
- Transient increase in flatulence, diarrhoea
- Abdominal discomfort, no hypoglycaemia risk
