Description
Voligbose has general properties similar to acarbose and selectively inhibits α-glucosidase in the enteric canal, delaying the digestion and absorption of carbohydrate, thereby suppressing sharp increase in post-prandial plasma glucose.
Indications
- Reduction in Post-Prandial Hyperglycaemia (PPHG) in diabetes mellitus (DM)
- Immunotherapy in non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) patients
- Combination therapy with other OHAs
- Prevention of onset of type 2 diabetes mellitus in impaired glucose tolerance
- In elderly patients and those with hepatic dysfunction or mild to moderate renal impairments
- In glycogen storage disease
- In non-diabetic Hyperinsulinemia
- In steroid induced diabetes mellitus
Pharmacology
Alpha-glucosidase inhibitors act as competitive inhibitors of enzymes needed to digest carbohydrates, reducing the rate of digestion of complex carbohydrates.
Dosage & Administration
- Normal Adult Dose: 0.2 mg, 3 times a day, before each meal
- Pediatrics: Safety and effectiveness not established
- Geriatrics: Administration at a lower dose and careful monitoring
Interaction
- Requires careful administration when co-administered with antidiabetic drugs and drugs which enhance or diminish the hypoglycaemic action of antidiabetic drugs
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Voglibose or its excipients
- Diabetic ketoacidosis, diabetic pre-coma
- Severe infection, before and after operation or with serious trauma
- Gastrointestinal obstruction or predisposed to it

- Increased pancreatic enzymes
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy: Safety not established
- Lactating and Nursing Mothers: Exceedingly low levels in human milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Careful administration in patients receiving other antidiabetic drugs
- Elderly patients
- Patients with hepatic or renal dysfunction
- Patients with chronic intestinal disease
- Patients with serious hepatic dysfunction
Use in Special Populations
Dosage in Renal Failure: No dose adjustment required
Overdose Effects
Transient increase in flatulence, diarrhoea, and abdominal discomfort
