Indications
- Treatment of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
- Treatment of Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
- Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections
Pharmacology
- Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
- Interference with the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days
- Adult dosage of 200-400 mg daily
- Dosage for elderly patients
- Dosage for children based on age and weight
Interaction
- Noted increases in prothrombin times in some patients
- Caution required in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Diarrhea and stool changes
- Nausea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, vomiting, flatulence
- Headache, dizziness
- Allergies in the form of rash, pruritus, urticaria
- Thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, eosinophilia
- Mild transient change in liver and renal function tests
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Caution required when used during pregnancy
- Caution required when administered to a nursing woman
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Caution in penicillin-sensitive patients
- Administration with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Altered normal flora of the colon and potential overgrowth of clostridia
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated
- No specific antidote exists
- Not effectively removed by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
