Indications

  • Relief from chronic heartburn symptoms
  • Healing of erosive esophagitis
  • Maintenance of healing of erosive esophagitis
  • Eradication of Helicobacter pylori infection in patients with duodenal ulcer disease
  • Treatment of Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome
  • Treatment of acid-related Dyspepsia
  • Treatment of duodenal and gastric ulcers

Pharmacology

  • Proton pump inhibitor
  • Suppresses gastric acid secretion
  • Absorption through enteric-coated pellet formulation
  • Metabolized in the liver by cytochrome P450 enzyme system
  • Extensive metabolism leading to inactive metabolites in urine and feces

Dosage

  • Oral dosage form
  • IV Injection or IV infusion
  • Different dosages for different indications
  • Dosage forms for pediatric and adult patients
  • Dosage for risk reduction of rebleeding of gastric or duodenal ulcers following therapeutic endoscopy

Administration

  • Tablet or capsule should be swallowed whole and taken one hour before a meal

Interaction

  • Metabolized by CYP2C19 and CYP3A4

  • Use of antacids while taking Esotor

Use in Special Populations

  • Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients not established
  • No overall differences in safety and efficacy observed in elderly patients
  • No dosage adjustment recommended for patients with mild to moderate hepatic insufficiency
  • Expected pharmacokinetics in patients with renal impairment

Overdose Effects

  • Lethal dose in rats
  • Signs of acute toxicity
