Indications

Pharmacology
- Broad-spectrum parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
- Interferes with synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- High stability in the presence of beta lactamases
- Relatively long plasma elimination half-life
- Not metabolized in the body
- Highly protein bound (95%)
Dosage
- Usual dose for adults: 1 to 2 gm by IV or IM administration once a day
- Maximum dose for adults: 4 gm/day
- Usual dose for infants and children: 50 to 75 mg/kg IV or IM once a day
- Maximum dose for infants and children: 2 gm/day
- Duration of therapy: 4 to 14 days
Administration
- Preparation of solutions for intramuscular/intravenous injections
- Administered over 2-4 minutes
- Patient tolerance test before starting treatment
- Freshly reconstituted solution recommended

Contraindications
- History of hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Gastro-intestinal effects including diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting
- Cutaneous reactions including rash, pruritus, and urticaria
- Hematologic reactions including eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia, and anemia
- Hepatic reactions including elevations of SGOT or SGPT, bilirubinemia
- CNS reactions including nervousness, confusion, and headache
- Local phlebitis following intravenous administration
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety in human pregnancy not established
- Caution when administered to a lactating mother

- Anaphylactic shock precautions
- Check blood picture during prolonged treatment
Use in Special Populations
- Not to be given to premature and newborn neonates
