Indications
- For the treatment of recurrent herpes labialis in adults and adolescents 12 years and older
Pharmacology
- Acyclovir is an antiviral drug active against herpes simplex virus
- Inhibits viral DNA replication through competitive inhibition, incorporation into viral DNA chain, and inactivation of viral DNA polymerase
Dosage & Administration
- Apply five times per day for four days
- Initiate therapy as early as possible
- Same dosage for adolescents 12 years and older
Interaction
- No identified interactions with topical or systemic administration of other drugs
- Unlikely systemic drug interactions due to minimal absorption
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to acyclovir, valacyclovir, or any component of the formulation
Side Effects
- Common adverse reactions at the application site include dry lips, desquamation, dryness of skin, burning skin, pruritus, flakiness of skin, and stinging
- Less than 1% occurrence in patients receiving the cream
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category B
- Use during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to fetus
- Not known if topically applied acyclovir is excreted in breast milk
- Minimal systemic exposure following topical administration
Precautions & Warnings
- Only apply on the external aspects of the lips and face
- Avoid application to human mucous membranes
- Intended for cutaneous use only
- Potential for irritation and contact
- Not established in immunocompromised patients
Use in Special Populations
- Safety profile in 12 to 17-year-old patients similar to that in adults
- Safety and effectiveness not established in patients less than 12 years of age
- Limited data for patients aged 65 and over
