Indications

  • Production of local or regional anesthesia by infiltration techniques
  • Peripheral nerve block techniques
  • Central neural techniques

Pharmacology

  • Decreases permeability of sodium ions
  • Blocks induction and conduction of nerve impulses
  • Combination with epinephrine restricts systemic spread of lidocaine

Dosage & Administration

  • Depends on route, type, and extent of surgical procedure
  • Max dose of lidocaine with epinephrine for adults and children

Interaction

  • Halogenated inhalation anaesthetics
  • Alpha or beta blocking agents
  • Drugs with vasoconstrictor and pressor effects
  • Antihypertensives
  • Adrenergic neuron blockers
  • Potassium-depleting drugs

Contraindications

  • Tachycardia
  • Hypertension
  • Cerebral arteriosclerosis
