Indications
- Treatment of active duodenal ulcer
- Benign gastric ulcer
- Ulcer associated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent
- Post operative stress ulcer
- Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Gastro-intestinal haemorrhage from stress ulcer
- Recurrent haemorrhage in patients with bleeding peptic ulcer
- Prevention of acid aspiration in obstetric patients
Pharmacology
- Competitive block of histamine at H2-receptors
- Inhibition of gastric acid secretion
- No effect on pepsin secretion
- No effect on pentagastrin-stimulated intrinsic factor secretion or serum gastrin
Dosage & Administration
- 150 mg twice daily for active duodenal ulcer
- 300 mg daily for benign gastric ulcer
- 150 mg twice daily for reflux oesophagitis
- 150 mg 3 times daily for Zollinger Ellison syndrome
- 150 mg twice daily for episodic dyspepsia
- 150 mg at night for maintenance
- 2-4 mg/kg twice daily for children with peptic ulcer
- Intravenous injection of 50 mg, repeated every six to eight hours
Interaction
- Delayed absorption with propantheline bromide
- Minimal inhibition of hepatic metabolism
- Altered absorption of pH-dependent drugs
- Reduced bioavailability with antacids

- Hypersensitivity to Ranitidine

- Reversible confusional states
- Headache
- Decreased blood counts
- Muscle or joint pain
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Crosses the placenta
- Use during pregnancy if essential
- Excreted in human breast milk
- Caution during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Reduced dosage for patients with impaired renal and hepatic function
Use in Special Populations
- Similar ulcer healing rates in elderly patients
- No difference in adverse effects in elderly patients

- No particular problems expected following overdosage
- Symptomatic and supportive therapy as appropriate
