Description
- Indicated in treatment of active duodenal ulcer
- Treatment of benign gastric ulcer
- Prevention of ulcer associated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent
- Treatment of post operative stress ulcer
- Treatment of Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome
- Treatment of Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Treatment of gastrointestinal haemorrhage from stress ulcer in seriously ill patients
- Prevention of recurrent haemorrhage in patients with bleeding peptic ulcer
- Used before general anesthesia in patients at risk of acid aspiration especially obstetric patients
- Pharmacological action includes competitive blocking of histamine at H2-receptors of gastric parietal cells
- Inhibition of gastric acid secretion
- No effect on pepsin secretion, pentagastrin-stimulated intrinsic factor secretion, or serum gastrin
- Dosage of 150 mg twice daily for duodenal and gastric ulcer treatment
- Dosage of 150 mg twice daily for treatment of reflux oesophagitis
- Dosage of 150 mg 3 times daily for Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
- Dosage of 150 mg twice daily for episodic dyspepsia
- Dosage of 150 mg at night for maintenance to prevent recurrences
- Child dosage of 2-4 mg/kg twice daily with a maximum of 300 mg daily
- Dosage of 50 mg via slow intravenous injection, repeated every six to eight hours, for prophylaxis of haemorrhage from stress ulceration in seriously ill patients
- Dosage of 25 mg per hour for two hours via intermittent intravenous infusion
- Increased peak serum concentration with propantheline bromide
- Minimal inhibition of hepatic metabolism of coumarin anticoagulants, theophylline, diazepam, and propranolol
- Potential alteration of absorption of pH-dependent drugs (e.g. ketoconazole, midazolam, glipizide)
- Reduced bioavailability with antacids
- Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to Ranitidine
- Well tolerated with uncommon side effects including altered bowel habit, dizziness, rash, tiredness, reversible confusional states, headache, decreased blood counts, muscle or joint pain
- Crosses the placenta with no evidence of impaired fertility or harm to the fetus
- Excreted in human breast milk
- Should be used with caution during lactation
- Reduced dosage recommended for patients with impaired renal and hepatic function
- Safe for use in elderly patients
- Ravia is very specific in action with no particular problems expected following overdosage
- Symptomatic and supportive therapy can be given as appropriate in case of overdosage
- Drug is removable from the plasma via haemodialysis if required
- Belongs to the H2 receptor antagonist therapeutic class
- Reconstitution guidelines for slow IV injection, intermittent slow IV infusion, and continuous IV infusion
