Description
- Rhine is a medication used for the treatment of active duodenal ulcer, benign gastric ulcer, ulcer associated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, post-operative stress ulcer, Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It competitively blocks histamine at H2-receptors of the gastric parietal cells, inhibiting gastric acid secretion.

Dosage Instructions
- 150 mg twice daily for duodenal and gastric ulcer
- Maintenance dose of 150 mg at night for preventing recurrences
- Recommended oral dose for children is 2-4 mg/kg twice daily
- Slow IV injection or intermittent IV infusion for different conditions
Pharmacology
- Competitively blocks histamine at H2-receptors of the gastric parietal cells
- Inhibits gastric acid secretion without affecting pepsin secretion, pentagastrin-stimulated intrinsic factor secretion, or serum gastrin
Interaction
- Delayed absorption with propantheline bromide
- Minimal inhibition of hepatic metabolism of certain drugs
- May alter absorption of pH-dependent drugs
- Reduction in bioavailability with antacids
