Description

  • Rhine is a medication used for the treatment of active duodenal ulcer, benign gastric ulcer, ulcer associated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, post-operative stress ulcer, Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It competitively blocks histamine at H2-receptors of the gastric parietal cells, inhibiting gastric acid secretion.

Dosage Instructions

  • 150 mg twice daily for duodenal and gastric ulcer
  • Maintenance dose of 150 mg at night for preventing recurrences
  • Recommended oral dose for children is 2-4 mg/kg twice daily
  • Slow IV injection or intermittent IV infusion for different conditions

Pharmacology

  • Competitively blocks histamine at H2-receptors of the gastric parietal cells
  • Inhibits gastric acid secretion without affecting pepsin secretion, pentagastrin-stimulated intrinsic factor secretion, or serum gastrin

Interaction

  • Delayed absorption with propantheline bromide
  • Minimal inhibition of hepatic metabolism of certain drugs
  • May alter absorption of pH-dependent drugs
  • Reduction in bioavailability with antacids
